What is Yoga Therapy?

Anita Claney, MS, is a yoga therapist working in private practice and, since 2009, has worked in the inpatient Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) program at the Southern Arizona Veteran's Administration Health Care System's (SAVHCS) main hospital. She works with the psychological team to provide yoga therapy as a complementary healing modality for veterans and active duty military undergoing intensive treatment for PTSD.

She was introduced to yoga as a complementary healing modality when she began practicing yoga to seek relief from chronic health issues. In 1998 she became a serious student of yoga, its philosophical origins, and associated texts. In 2005 she travelled to India where she began studying with her current teacher, Menaka Desikachar, who is a senior therapy consultant at the world famous yoga therapy clinic, the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM). Menaka, the wife of renowned yoga master and healer TKV Desikachar, also teaches yoga therapy trainees for the Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation (KHYF), founded by her husband and son, Kausthub Desikachar.

The yoga practices given to her by Menaka Desikachar led to such positive changes in her health that she continued her studies to become a KHYF yoga teacher.

She then undertook and completed an additional 4 year 1,000 hour yoga therapy training offered by the KHYF. The training included two clinical internships at the KYM, a qualitative research study on Yoga Therapy and PTSD, and ongoing mentorship and study with her teacher, Menaka Desikachar.

Anita's teaching style is noted for its easy going warmth and patience. She uses what she has learned from years of her own yoga practices, her relationship with her teacher and mentor, and her studies with the KHYF and KYM. This knowledge is passed on to her students in yoga practices that are personally tailored to each student's needs and goals. She sees each student as a unique individual with the potential, no matter the starting point, to experience positive change in their life.
